This was happening to me a while ago with one of my cats. After doing some research, I was not alone. Some cats seem to open the refrigerator door for some reason.

Do Cats Like Refrigerators?
First, we should understand what makes a cat want to open the refrigerator door.
Cats like to investigate their surroundings. Their curiosity makes them search for new places or items all the time. They probably noticed you getting some interesting stuff out of the fridge, therefore raising their interest. But among all places, why the refrigerator?
Also, they just like to open stuff (if they can get their head around it). Cats can learn through observation and try their best to fulfill their goal. In this case, opening the refrigerator door.
They love it because they see it as a playground where they can climb and watch from above all of your movements and whatever happens in the house, as they want to be aware of everything that happens all the time.
If they manage to get inside, They will find a lot of intriguing items with to smell and feel. These items won’t always be the same, as you restock the fridge, there is always an excuse to get inside and see what’s new.
Cats also love to find new places to hide, and your fridge is a perfect place to do that. They can even find more than one spot if it’s big enough!
If being on top or inside the fridge is the new thing for your cat, you must know that cats can be interested in something today, and forget it tomorrow. They really do have phases where they obsess with something!

Why Does My Cat Get Inside The Fridge?
A cramped space where they can fit in is amusing for them.
They feel secure and hidden if they are successful on their mission. Considering the cold not being too high to bother, they may want to stay inside for a while.
Cats like to stay warm, so even on a hot summer day, they won’t seek the fridge to cool down.
Your cats are mostly obsessed with the refrigerator because they associate it with food. When opened, the smell of what’s inside invades their noses, so they know what’s going on.
Moreover, they have seen you many times getting food out, making it a very interesting place.
Although unlikely, your cat could have a fever. If they feel too hot, they may get inside the fridge to try and ease it.
Can a Cat Open The Refrigerator Door?
Yes, they can. Driven by any of the reasons mentioned below, they can try to get inside. They are unpredictable! So maybe all of this doesn’t come as a surprise to you.
I have heard so many stories about cats doing unbelievable things that I can’t count how many.
Be aware and not underestimate them, as cats can be very determined, this is not just orange cat behavior!. If they have the idea that they want to get inside or simply open the refrigerator, they will try their best to see it done.
Why is my cat meowing at the fridge?
Cats meow to communicate with us. It is their way of telling us what they want. They can meow to ask for food or if they are displeased about something.
They could just want some food, and they know you store some in there. This gets worse if their favorite snack is inside the fridge and they know it.
If something is bothering them, it probably is the closed door. And they are asking if you could kindly open it for them, as they have urgent matters to deal with inside.
How to stop my Cat from Opening The Refrigerator Door?
In the beginning, I had to put objects in front of the fridge door while I was away so I would not find it open on my return. Here are some more comfortable methods for you to try:
Covering the Food
One option for them to be less interested in the fridge is to cover up the food. Sometimes, it’s the smell that attracts them, so if they don’t smell anything attractive, there is no reason for them to stay interested (if food is their main driver to the fridge)
Use Cat Repellent
There are some odors that cats find repulsive, and vinegar is one of them. You can buy it here or do it yourself by mixing vinegar with rosemary and lemon juice, you will get a great homemade cat repellent. Spray this around the fridge’s door and they will be easily discouraged. You can use this to make them stay away from any other object or area of the house you would like to keep them away from too.
Childproof Locks
Have you ever heard that cats are like children? That’s exactly how we need to see them in order to face this problem.
Using child locks to prevent your cat from opening the refrigerator door may not sound too crazy after all we have explained so far (see picture for reference)
This is my favorite solution, as you can be 100% sure they won’t be opening it. (You never know, but it seems to work just fine for now!) You can use it until they forget about the matter and start focusing on other stuff around the house. Then you can remove it.

To sum up, Cats can be attracted to or inside the fridge for many reasons. However, most of the time the main driver for a cat to open the refrigerator door is curiosity.
Cats love the fridge since they see it as a playground. and they can meow to you if the playground’s door is closed.
If they manage to open the door, you will most likely want them to stop. so you can try using repellent, covering up the smelly food or using a childproof lock.
